Pico del Teide rises 3,715 metres above sea level, making it the highest point on Spanish soil and the third-tallest volcanic structure on Earth when measured from its base on the ocean floor. Only the summit cone is visible from the coast. The rest sits submerged beneath the Atlantic. The caldera that surrounds it, Las Cañadas, spans roughly 16 kilometres and formed through a sequence of collapses and lateral landslides beginning some 180,000 years ago. Guanche inhabitants of the island called the mountain Echeyde and understood it as the dwelling of Guayota, a malign figure who had imprisoned the sun god Magec inside the crater. Spanish chroniclers recorded the name in the fifteenth century. The last eruption within the park occurred at Narices del Teide in 1798, a fissure event lasting three months. Chinyero, on the western flank outside the caldera boundary, erupted in 1909 and remains the island's most recent volcanic activity. UNESCO inscribed the park as a World Heritage Site in 2007, citing both its geological record and its visual coherence. The 18,990-hectare reserve holds Roques de García, a spine of eroded dyke material that includes the much-photographed Roque Cinchado, and the Llano de Ucanca, a flat sediment plain that fills briefly with water after heavy rain. Obsidian flows, phonolite domes and pahoehoe fields sit within a few kilometres of one another. Around 220 plant species grow here, more than fifty of them endemic, including the red-flowered tajinaste rojo that reaches three metres in early summer. Entrance to the park is free at 0 EUR, with fees applying only to specific summit hiking trails. The mountain matters today for reasons that extend beyond scenery. Clear air, high altitude and an inversion layer that traps cloud below roughly 1,500 metres made the region one of the earliest protected dark-sky zones in Europe, and the Teide Observatory on the northeastern slope has operated since 1964.
